On July 1, 2020, the day after the Hong Kong National Security Law came into effect, Tong Ying‑kit, then only 23 years old, rode a motorcycle bearing slogans advocating “Hong Kong independence” in both Chinese and English, and crashed into a police cordon in Wan Chai, injuring three officers. He was charged with inciting secession and terrorist activities under the National Security Law, among other offences, and was eventually sentenced to nine years in prison.
In his prime years, he must now spend his youth behind bars. Fortunately, Tong began to show remorse while in prison: he joined a rehabilitation program, learned emotional management, and started planning for his life after release. His case demonstrates that education can help eliminate violent and radical thoughts.
